Our very own CHRIS GILBERT won the Classic Quarter - a 44 mile run from Lizard Point to Lands End!! Chris's time was 13.46.24. A fantastic time. Well done Chris. See the results here.
The Great Lanhydrock Run
Monday, June 28, 2010

There was a good crowd - 161 runners for this inaugural 10 mile race around the beautiful Lanhydrock estate. There wasn't much flat ground and it included the fearful Cutmadock Hill. The weather was fine and hot. Much drinking was done en route and afterward.
Nine Harriers took part with Sharon Daw first woman and first in her age group in 1.14.40 and Paul Arrowsmith in 1.16.04. Mary Mullarkey was first in her age group and came in 1.39.25. The women's team won first place: Sharon, Mary, Sarah and Siobahn. It is a great course and Mat Lewis is suggesting that it will be an annual event from now on.
The Burrator Horseshoe
Tuesday, June 22, 2010
A great alternative to the roads of Sticker - this brilliant cross-moorland 6miler is held every year at the Meavy village Oak Fair. There is a huge climb up from the village and over two tors before dropping down into the valley again. Two ECH guys were brave enough to do it: Chris Ulman who was 10th (out of 151 runners) and completed it in 49.13. A great time for that terrain. Ian Ringer was the other one and finished in 58.19 in 61st place. Its a great day out. - try it next year.
London Marathon Club Places 2011
Monday, June 14, 2010

In recognition of the prestigious value of the London Marathon Club entries your Committee decided at its meeting on the 18th May 2010 to revise one of the eligibility criteria. The change requires the member to have trained or raced for the club on at least 12 occasions during the previous 12 months in place of the 4 occasions previously required. Good luck to everyone.
Cubert 5
Wednesday, June 09, 2010
The weather on the previous days was a bit worrying for the annual dash around the lanes of Cubert. But the evening was warm, dry and balmy. There was a good turnout from the Harriers - 23 in all. Notables were: Dan Nash in 9th place in 26.53 and Steve Gentle in 29.05. Revis was first in here age group in 30.45 and Mary Mullarkey first in her age group in 39.57. Well done people. The star of the evening has to be Mark andrews who, having done the gruelling Dartmoor Discovery (32 miles) last Saturday, finished in a very credible 36.24. Well done Mark. And well done to everyone.
Dartmoor Discovery
Sunday, June 06, 2010

The Dartmoor Discovery is one of the lesser known gems of the South West Road racing calendar. Presumably it's 32 and half miles and hills that make running the Cornish marathon seem like a jaunt across the salt lakes of Utah, that scares most runners off, however it is undoubtedly the most scenic race you could ever hope to run and an incredible challenge. This year Diane Roy managed to persuade another five fearless individuals/saps (delete as appropriate to personal viewpoint) from the Harriers to join her on this incredible race. The temperature had been rising all week, and many feared an absolute scorcher on Saturday, but despite an early appearance by the sun, the thermometre never climbed much over 20. The race loses an aggregate of 1000 ft in the first 13 miles and gains it back in the last 17, so it's not one for negative splits, it demands rigorous pacing and a lot of courage for one of the worst hills arrives after 31 miles.
In the event Diane Roy was first home for the Harriers, 2nd lady and in 16th place overall. She also scooped first in the vet female 45-49 category and first local female to boot, finishing in an absolutely superb time of 4.35.50. The second Harrier and running the Discovery for the first time was Chris Ullman in a time of 4.51.10 in 26th overall catching Revis on the hop with the camera who was expecting Sharon to be next. Sharon Daw was third Harrier home in 4.56.06 claiming a well deserved first place in the vet female 40-44 age category. Fourth home was Rob Pick in 45th a 3 minute course pb of 5.05.31. Fifth home in 64th with an amazing half hour course pb of 5.27.42 was John Brady. Sixth home in 92nd, and keeping the team on tenterhooks after suffering bouts of cramp in his legs, was Mark Andrews in 5.47.02, who at least hadn't lost his sense of humour, asking "whose idea was it to run this then?" The mens team narrowly missed out on a team prize coming 5th overall. Thank you to Revis, Ian, Colin and Pete for coming down and supporting.
Plymouth Half
Tuesday, June 01, 2010
The Plymouth Half marathon is the biggest profile long distance road race in the South West, and always attracts a big turnout from the Harriers. This year’s race was marred by an unfortunate incident where a race spectator was hit and seriously injured by a car on Laira Bridge road close to 4 mile mark. The sun broke through early on and provided warmer than expected conditions, keeping the vast crews of cadets and volunteers busy at the water stations. In the event 21 Harriers turned out (probably more, but several weren't running in club colours and so I can't track their results), and were led home by Revis Crowle in an excellent time of 01:28:55 finishing as 8th lady overall, and first in the female vet 45-49 age category. Next home keeping up a slew of hugely consistent half marathon times was Diane Roy in 1.32.07, 14th lady over and second in the 45-49 category. The first male home for the Harriers was Chris Ullman in 1.33.14, narrowly improving on last year’s time for the course. There was a four minute gap then to the next set of Harriers, next of whom was Rob Pick in 1.37.41, hotly pursued by Mark Andrews in 1.38.05. Ian Crowle was happy to return after injury without any problems in 1.39.44, Pete Nash recorded 1.40.36 and Claire Davidson recorded 1.40.38 but had been hoping to duck under the 1.40 marker. Alan Green got back in 1.43.35 and Andrew Sims managed a new pb with 1.43.58. Alison Ross was next with 1.48.18 and Rita Hoile got third in the female over 55 category with 1.53.53. The next 3 Harriers were very closely positioned, Karen Sims 1.56.02, Oliver Jones 1.57.51, Carol Pollard 1.57.52. Victoria Rogers fell on a speed bump early on but still managed to get up and capture a pb in 2.00.56. Ann Wendick Byfield finished in 2.03.56, Lynne Budge 2.10.18, Kerrie Clarke 2.11.12 and Sue Craze managed to go over 6 minutes quicker than last year in 2.22.47.
Ivybridge 10k
Tuesday, May 18, 2010

The most popular 10k in the Cornwall/Devon region has a knack of forcing a small blue window in the skies for the duration of a few hours each year. This year a record 698 runners congregated on the small railway station at the summit of the town, among them 21 Harriers. A welcome breeze in the air kept away a humidity from the flower strewn lanes, and perhaps this accounted for not only the course record being broken by Kairn Stone the "local" Newham and Essex Beagle in 31.08, but a huge swathe of pbs and great performances from Harriers members.
First back was the ever dependable Stephen Gentle, 19th overall with one of his fastest times a spectacular 36.29. Next back and second lady overall was Revis Crowle in 39.11 a smidgeon faster than last year, and the first person in the winning ladies team. Third home for the Harriers in 49th overall and a new pb after a couple of difficult races was Steven Sims in 39.32. Fourth home and making a highly impressive debut at this distance was Liam Gallantry in 39.51. Slightly behind him with a new pb, but cruelly just three seconds outside the 40 minute barrier was Ian Littlewood in 40.03. Only a minute behind was a whole cluster of Harriers, next in was Diane Roy in 41.00 seconds dead, second lady in her age category and second part of the winning ladies team. Fractionally behind her was Chris Ullman in another pb of 41.07, overtaken by Di in the last kilometre. Another 7 seconds further back was Paul Arrowsmith in 41.14, and only three seconds behind him was Harriers debutante Marc Doyle.
The pbs continued further down the field with Rob Pick recording 42.59 next home. Claire Davidson completed the winning ladies team in 43.29, and making it a total of 11 Harriers who were all under 7 minute miling. The next two Harriers home, John Brady in 43.52 and Andrew Sims in 45.59 were also new pbs for both runners. Louise England, Jessica Behenna and Ray Goodright crossed the line very closely together in times of 48.40, 48.40 and 48.43. Tessa Mason was next in 50.26, Victoria Rogers also recorded a pb with 50.55, Che Alee got back in 51.31, Karen Sims made 52.04 and Sue Craze rounded up the team in 1.02.48.
Dan and Owen Bomb Boconnoc

Dan Nash did it again at the Boconnoc 5 mile race today. Dan was first last year an d again today. He completed the difficult course in 31.07. Well done Dan. Not far behind was Owen Morris in 11th place in 34.14. ECH is proud of both. Sharon Daw was first in her age group in 19th place in 36.34. Jenny Nash, 38th in 39.22. Other results were: Ian Ringer, 62nd 42.35. Rupert Warwick 63rd. Clive Shute 65th 43.01. Mary Mullarkey 92nd 46.46. Ann Wendik-Byfield, 95th 47.06. Emma Dales 135th 53.50. WELL DONE EVERYONE.

East Cornwall Harriers takes pride of place in the spring edition of the England Athletics magazine. The article is about the Armada McCain Athletics Network, of which ECH is part. There is a NICE photograph of very smart looking members. You can find the mag online on: http://www.englandathletics.org/page.asp?section=747&search=Setting+the+Pace
