Magnificent 7

   Tuesday, July 20, 2010

The Magnificent 7 is one of the most brutal races on the Grand Prix calendar with huge hills at 1 mile and again at 6 miles. This race has a knack of conjuring the sun for half hour periods during the most difficult sections of the race. Eighteen Harriers were available for this one, and first home this time was Stephen Gentle in an excellent 13th place with a time of 44.37. Liam Smith has only just become old enough to make the step up to the longer races, but his performances have already been very eye-catching, and here he was next home in 40th in a time of 47.13. Third home was Ian Littlewood in 44th with a fast time of 47.40, finally finishing on ahead in a long running friendly rivalry with Revis Crowle. Revis was fifth lady overall and first in the vet 45-49 category in a time of 48.16. Fractionally behind Revis was Adam Purvis in 48.22. Next was Diane Roy picking up 2nd in the vet-45-49 category in a time of 48.37. Only just behind was Paul Arrowsmith in 48.46. Sharon Daw was next coming second in the vet 40-44 category with a time of 49.19, and together with Claire Davidson who finished in 57.36, they picked up 2nd ladies team behind Cornwall Athletics club. Chris Ullman finished in 49.58, completing the men's team, who yet again unluckily finished 4th in a Grand Prix race for the 3rd time running. Rob Pick was next back in 53.10. Andrew Sims had a course pb with 54:31. Sarah Kriskovic and Louise England raced each other to the line and both sneaked under the hour barrier with times of 59.15 and 59.21 respectively. Karen Mahoney and Ray Goodright finished just outside the hour in 1.01.26 and 1.01.28. Amanda Erith picked up 2nd in the vet female 55-59 in 1.01.53 and Karen Sims rounded up the Harriers with 1.05.55.

Message Re: Tavey Town Relays

   Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Dear fellow athletes. On behalf of Tavistock Athletics, please can I say a big thank you to your club in turning out on yet another typical british summer evening!! Whilst the weather is beyond our control, can I advise that there are minor mistakes in the timings of two of your runners in the senior mens relay team. Runner Smith time was 5mins 46 secs and runner Sims was also 5mins 46 secs. The overall time was the same. I hope you enjoyed the evening all the same and look forward to next year – wellie boots optional! Rob Kirby Tavistock Athletic Club

Attack near Minions

   Thursday, July 15, 2010

This worrying attack occurred yesterday. See the link below. Unfortunately although very rare in our part of the world, it pays to be careful: Always run with a friend - especially in deserted spots and tell someone where you are going and what time you are likely to return. Click here to read the report.

From descriptions of the locality it sounds like a route known to the Harriers (The Pensilva-Minions footpath along the old railway) and also happened in broad daylight, so please be aware.

Launceston Half

   Monday, July 05, 2010

"The Beast" had its final run yesterday. As hard as ever but a good challenge. Although it was warm, a bit of drizzle late in the race helped. Nineteen members turned out - possible a record for this race. Bob Brown and Mark Davidson did good times in 1.28.18 and 1.28.46 respectively. Steve Gentle also had a great run and, in 23rd place came in at 1.29.01. Well done boys. Revis was first ECH lady home in 41st place in 1.32.42 and first in her age group, followed closely by Dianne Roy in 1.32.54 - 43rd. A special mention must go to Liam Smith who, on his first ever half marathon beat his dad and came home in a brilliant 52nd place in 1.35.27, 12 seconds in front of Adam. Amanda Erith had a good run and was first in her age group and came in just under the 2 hour mark in 1.59.18. Well done to all who represented the club so well.
